Mk 9 Spitfire MK356

Spitfire Mk 9

Operational in March 1944, Spitfire LF Mk IXe, MK356, was optimised for low level operations, below 25,000'.

She was operated by 443 Squadron, Royal Canadian Air Force and, in the hands of her pilot Fg. Off. Gordon Ockenden, on 7th June 1944, she engaged four enemy Bf109s. She was credited with half a kill and returned unscathed.

Unfortunately during her short career she made three belly landings, the third of which saw her out of the war.

This Spitfire is yet another in which I had the great pleasure of playing hangar pilots. Without ever leaving the hangar we shot down countless enemy aircraft together.

Fifty three years on the ground came to an end when this immaculate Spitfire took to the air again, in November 1997. Now with the Royal Air Force Battle of Britain Memorial Flight she is a much appreciated regular on the circuit.
