Lockheed P38 Lightning

Lockheed P38 Lighning
Lockheed P38 Lightning. The Lightning was instrumental in the death of Japans greatest Admiral during the last great war. Admiral Yamamoto was on a tour of inspection in an area which was felt should be well out of range of US fighters. But by employing the skills of one great long distance pilot to teach his methods of getting the absolute maximum range out of his aircraft, US pilots were able to reach the island of Rabaul where, on 18th April 1943, they ambushed Yamamotos Mitsubishi G4M Betty.

Ironic that the long range expert was Charles Lindberg, viewed by many as pro Nazi.
